How To Sell a Script – Create a Space For Yourself on the Internet

Most people have heard of the movie Juno(if you haven’t, it’s a film where Ellen Page gets pregnant and talks on a hamburger phone while extolling the virtues of Morgan Freeman), but they aren’t familiar with the story of how Diablo Cody, the film’s screenwriter, came to the attention of the industry in the first place, and that’s the part that concerns us, as it’s a great example of how to sell a script.

For the sake of brevity, here are the important parts of the story –Diablo Cody is an ex-stripper (because she’s now a working writer, for better or worse) who, while she was stripping, was also maintaining a blog about her experiences. Long story short, this blog came to the attention of some assistant to someone in the industry, who liked it enough to refer it to their boss, and then Diablo Cody was, seemingly overnight, getting to make a movie with the son of the guy who directed Ghostbusters (your author met him, by the way – Jason Reitman is an incredibly nice guy in real life.) This is a great success story in terms of learning how to sell a script.

The point to all of this is that if you’re not on the Internet, how is Hollywood supposed to know that you’re out there? A good way to increase your visibility within the industry, and to help with selling a screenplay, is to maintain a presence on the following social media pages:

1. Facebook (get an author or fan page, not a regular one)
2. Website for your resume
3. Make a blog
4. Get a Twitter account
5. Maintain a presence on LinkedIn

One thing that should be given some serious attention is that what you choose to write about is very important. If you’re trying to get the attention of people who work in the film industry, the last thingyou should be writing about if you’re trying to sell a screenplay is the film industry – they already work there, remember? It is more than likely that they know far more than you do where that particular area is concerned.

The key here is to write about something that is unique to you and that most people don’t have a whole ton of information about. If you worked on an oil rig, or you used to work at NASA, or you really saw Bigfoot, those are all great things to talk about. Remember, you’re trying to make yourself stand out here – acting like everyone else who is trying to break into the industry at the same time as you is not going to help your cause in the slightest, so standing out is how to sell a script!
